Australia-Japan Foundation Act

The Australia-Japan Foundation was established by the Commonwealth Government of Australia by the Australia-Japan Foundation Act 1976 (the "AJF Act"). The AJF is responsible to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The function of the AJF is to encourage a closer relationship between the peoples of Australia and Japan and to further the mutual knowledge and understanding of those peoples.

Further, the AJF is to, in particular (see section 5 of the AJF Act for the complete wording):

  • promote the study by the people of each of those countries of the language, culture and traditions, the social and political institutions, and the economic and industrial organization, of the people of the other country;
  • promote the study by the people of each of those countries of the physical features, climate and ecology of the other country; and
  • to encourage people of each of those countries to visit the other country.

The AJF must also provide advice to the Minister of Foreign Affairs as requested, and shall perform its functions in accord with any general directions from the Minister.
