Sir Neil Currie Australian Studies Awards

2011-12 Curriculum Development Award

The Curriculum Development Award provides financial assistance to Japanese academics to develop curriculum that furthers the study and understanding of Australia in Japan.

We also welcome applications from Australian applicants in partnership with Japanese academics and/or institutions.

Good quality proposals will be considered from a broad range of areas. Proposals related to the following areas are particularly encouraged.

  • Australia-Japan relationship within the Asia-Pacific region.
  • Trade, economics, politics
  • Environment
  • Social issues (e.g. aging, women's issues, education, Health)

Value of award

Up to AUD 20,000 per awardee (subject to the decision of selection comittee and availability of funds)

* Grant is normally awarded in Japanese currency using the exchange rate at the time of transferring the grant to a recipient's account. Australian applicants are normally awarded in AUS$

Application deadline

Friday, 6 April 2012 - marked by close of business day (one round per year)

Award may be used as a contribution towards

  • purchase of materials
  • cost for curriculum development (in Japan)
  • return (economy) airfare, living costs
  • research costs
  • inviting Australian academics to hold lectures at Japanese universities

Payment for all costs incurred beyond the awarded amount is the responsibility of the awardee.

Eligible candidates must

  • be currently working full time as academics in university or graduate schools authorised by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology or
  • be currently working full time as academics in university of graduate schools authorised by the Australian government.
  • be citizens or permanent residents of Japan or Australia
  • have enough ability to speak and understand English
  • start research activities and/or preparation by no later than end of June 2012.
  • have permission from Japanese university to establish a new course and/or expand the curriculum of an existing course.
  • have the approval of the host institution to conduct research in Australia (if applicable)
  • The implemention of research results to commence by no later than 30 June 2013. The aquittal report should be submitted within 28 days from the commencement of the new/enhanced curriculum. A progress report is also required within 28 days from the completion of their research.
  • ensure that the host institution reports on the outcome and achievement of the research program undertaken in Australia

Selection and Notification

The 2011-12 Awardees will be selected by a panel established by the Australia-Japan Foundation. All applicants will be notified of the results by the end of May 2012.

The Award will be formally granted upon receipt of an acceptance form and a funding agreement signed by the successful applicant confirming that they accept all conditions set out by the Foundation in relation to the provision of the Award.
