Sir Neil Currie Australian Studies Awards

2011-12 Publication Award

The Publication Award supports publication of quality books related to Australian studies written in the Japanese language.

Writings eligible for the Award include contemporary works on Australian society in areas such as politics, economy, literature, education, environment and welfare, as well as works intended to deepen knowledge and understanding of the Australia-Japan relationship.

Value of award

Up to AUD 10,000 per publication (subject to the decision of selection comittee and availability of funds)

* Grant is normally awarded in Japanese currency using the exchange rate at the time of transferring the grant to a recipient's account

Application Deadline

Friday, 6 April 2012 - marked by close of business day (one round per year)

Award provides assistance for

  • Books written about Australia in Japanese by Japanese academics which are scheduled for publication. (Books edited by Japanese academics are also applicable. Publications do not need to devote the whole contents to Australia-related topics)
  • Translation into Japanese of Australian-authored books on Australia related, which are scheduled for publication.
  • Japanese editions of books resulting from joint research by Australia and Japanese academics on Australia related, which are scheduled for publication.

Payment for all costs incurred beyond the awarded amount is the responsibility of the awardee.

Eligibility requirements

  • Awards will only be granted to publications that have a firm commitment from a publishing company and are scheduled to be released by the end of June 2013.
  • Preference will be given to writings covering issues that have not yet been published and writings that can be used as textbooks for universities and other educational institutions in Japan.
  • Applications from younger researchers are welcome. Genres and themes are not limited to those noted above.
  • Previously published books will be excluded from the selection process.
  • Acquittal report is also required within 28 days from the completion of their research.

How to apply

Send the following documentation (one original / two copies) in Japanese to the Australia-Japan Foundation.

  1. Completed application form in Japanese. Download Application Form [WORD 53kb]
  2. Table of contents and summary written in Japanese (It is preferable that the first draft is completed at the time of application. As a minimum at least half of the manuscript must be completed at the time of application).
  3. Curriculum Vitae of applicant (author/translator) in Japanese and English.
  4. Two recommendation letters written by experts in the area concerned
  5. Approval for publication from a publishing company (Please include all details stated in the application form, section 6.)

Selection and Notification

The selection will be conducted by a selection panel established by the Australia-Japan Foundation. All applicants will be notified of the results by the end of May 2012.

The award will be formally granted upon receipt of an acceptance form and a funding agreement signed by the successful applicant confirming that they accept conditions set out by the Foundation in relation to the provision of the Award.
